Know Your Rights

If ICE Comes to Your Home

Follow these steps immediately if approached at your home.

  1. Do not consent to a search

    Say this

    I do not consent to entry.

    DO NOT

    • Open the door or step outside.

    DO

    • Record from inside your home.

  2. Ask for identification

    1. Request badge numbers and names.
    2. Record or write down this information.

  3. Demand to see a warrant

    If they have no court warrant, or only show a DHS or ICE warrant:

    1. Say: “I exercise my right to remain silent.”
    2. Say: “You cannot enter without my consent.”
    3. Keep the door closed.

    If they claim to have a warrant:

    1. Request they slide it under the door or display it at a window.
    2. Photograph the warrant.

    Read the warrant carefully:

    • Look for the name of a federal or state court. A warrant issued only by DHS or ICE is not a court warrant.
    • An arrest warrant names a person. A search warrant identifies the place or person to be searched.
    • Read what the warrant allows. Check any deadline printed on it.

    If they do not show a court warrant that allows entry:

    1. Say: “I do not consent to entry. I choose to remain silent.”
    2. Keep the door closed.

  4. If ICE enters your home

    1. Record what happens, including any force, threats, lies, or searching beyond the warrant.
    2. If you cannot film during the incident, record yourself describing what happened as soon as possible afterward.
